Studio 36

Kristin McFarlane - Glass Artist, Mixed Media

Kristin’s artwork combines botanical specimens, glass and sculpture to explore the concept of ‘fragile strength’ through delicate, multi-layered, kiln formed glass works with mixed media inclusions. She collates petals and flowers into flat works or reconstructs them into sculptural forms with wire and thread. Floral compositions are photographed, turned into decal prints and fused between layers of glass.

Kristin’s studio is full of containers of preserved botanical specimens which she fuses inside glass. Her process is very scientific and she documents all her tests for reference. Most of her work contains silver leaf, and she is currently exploring ways of casting plants in 3 dimensions. Kristin also makes a range of production earrings and works on exhibition pieces.

From the Artist

My current body of work explores the interplay between fragility and strength in nature. I preserve botanical specimens with glass to transform something fleeting and of no perceived value into an object with integrity, gravitas and permanence. I am interested in illustrating the delicate balance of nature and the fragile strength of life.
